Wine Making -- 1981 to 1984

What Is All This Stuff?

Unfortunately I have no real records of the wines I made between 1981 and 1984, just a memory of the types I made. I didn't make much, and they certainly didn't turn out all that well, especially in comparison to later years. However, at the time they seemed mighty fine!

To be fair to myself, I made the wines from recipes I found in odd places (like the newspaper), recipes written by people who didn't necessarily know all that much more than I did. But it got me going, got me wishing to make something better. And it did!

My initial fermenter? A used beerball. It held a total of 5 gallons and I was able to make about 3 gallons of wine in it. There was not secondary fermentation, no racking -- I just poured the clear wine off the sediment. Needless to say the clarity wasn't even vaguely close to perfect! ROFL!

Some of my thoughts on the quality of the wine may be altered by hindsight -- we certainly drank all that I made, so it was at least that good!
