Tasting Notes for Bryan's Wines

November 2011

While paging through my notes comparing wines, it occurred to me that it would be handy to have my notes on a single page. Had an hour free so it is!

Tasting Notes

2009 Barolo

11/13/2011

The off flavors previously noted have not lessened significantly. The wine is fine for cooking, and ok with food, but not for casual sipping.

2011 Pomagranate/Zinfandel

11/13/2011

Last week I tried some of this with dinner. NOT a good choice, this is a sipping wine not one for typical meals. Too sweet.

2011 Green Apple/Riesling

11/11/2011

This one is growing on me. Too sweet for normal meals, although people who like sweet wines might call it dry. Definitely fruity, the type of wine I'd make at most once a year.

2011 Chardonnay-Semillion

11/09/2011

This one is a keeper! I'm not massively fond of most chardonnays, the semillon rounds this one out. I'll make it again.

2011 Pinotage

11/07/2011

I made this one too strong. At 12.75% alcohol it's a butt kicker, feels like it's 15%. Love this wine and will make it again, but it's too strong.

This reminds me of Tony, one of my customers when I owned/operated The Winery. Tony bought Zinfandel every year and chaptalized it up to 32 brix. Damned stuff would knock down a horse. The only difference is that my wine tastes good! :-)

2011 Green Apple/Riesling

09/14/2011

Bottled. Another one that is tasty at bottling. It may be that leaving an extra couple months int the carboy helps, something I hadn't noticed before in kits. Although to be fair, in the past I've left a few on the lees too long which produces off flavors.

2011 Pomagranate/Zinfandel

09/14/2011

I like this one better than the Green Apple-Riesling. This one is probably a keeper, although my preferences is for dry reds.

2011 Chardonnay-Semillion

09/08/2011

Four month is the bottle have done well by this one. I'll make this kit again.

2011 Pinotage

09/08/2011

Bottled. Very tasty at bottling. I'd have good expectations for this one aging ... except it won't last long enough to age!

2011 Chardonnay-Semillion

05/20/2011

Bottled. Surprisingly tasty at bottling. Didn't taste as green as I'd expect. Still going to age a few months before tapping the next one.

2009 Barolo

03/18/2011

Opened a bottle for making spaghetti sauce. The off flavors I noticed at bottling are there, but seem to be lessening. Six months in the bottle may smooth this one out nicely. However, future kits I will bottle on a more timely basis!

2009 Barolo

03/06/2011

Bottled. Tasted a bit earthy at bottling time, probably from all that time spent on the lees. Kits don't benefit from aging on the lees, nor do they seem to benefit from bulk aging. Next kits should be done roughly within the timeframe specified in the directions.
